What is GEO and why does AI discoverability matter?

A practical guide for enterprise brands preparing for AI answer engines.

Direct answer

GEO — generative engine optimisation — is the practice of making a brand legible to AI answer engines. It matters because an increasing share of first impressions is formed by a generated summary the company never wrote, assembled from whatever public signals are easiest to read and corroborate.

SEO and GEO are not the same problem

SEO optimises for a ranked list of links: the user still arrives at your page and reads your words. GEO optimises for a synthesised answer: a model reads your content, weighs it against other sources, and presents a compressed conclusion.

The practical consequence is that accuracy and consistency start to matter as much as visibility. A page can rank well and still contribute to a wrong summary if the underlying entity data conflicts with other public sources.

What AI answer engines need to understand a brand

They need retrievable text, an unambiguous identity, explicit relationships between entities, and corroboration from sources they already trust. Everything else is detail.

Signals that carry the most weight

  1. 01

    Indexability

If a crawler cannot reach and render the content, no downstream system can cite it. Client-only rendering and blocked paths remain the most common cause of absence.

  2. 02

    Structured data

Organization, Product, FAQ and Article markup give machines an unambiguous reading of what a page asserts, instead of asking them to infer it from layout.

  3. 03

    Entity consistency

Legal name, brand name, addresses, leadership and subsidiary relationships must match across the site, registries and directories. Divergence is the strongest driver of inaccurate AI summaries.

  4. 04

    Authoritative third-party references

Answer engines weight corroboration. Coverage, registries and reputable industry sources confirm claims that a corporate site makes about itself.

  5. 05

    FAQ and guide content

Question-shaped content answers question-shaped prompts. Direct answers placed early in a page are far more quotable than narrative introductions.

  6. 06

    Crawlable content

Text in images, PDF-only disclosures and script-gated sections are effectively invisible. Anything that matters should exist as retrievable HTML.

No visibility guarantee

No practice, vendor or checklist can guarantee inclusion or placement in an AI-generated answer. Answer engines change retrieval and ranking behaviour without notice. What these signals do is remove the avoidable reasons for being misread or omitted.
